29th Annual Sphinx Competition
SphinxConnect coincides with the annual Sphinx Competition, our flagship program presented at the Orchestra Hall, home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The Sphinx Competition, held every year in Detroit (MI), is a national competition for string musicians, that transforms lives by celebrating the artistic talent, providing career advancement opportunities and addressing systemic obstacles within Black and Latino communities.
Finalists in both divisions have the opportunity to perform with the professional Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, comprised of top professionals from around the country, and compete for a total of more than $100,000 in prizes, including the top Robert Frederick Smith Prize.
Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions (SOPA) Excerpt Competition
SOPA transforms lives by providing aspiring orchestral musicians the unique opportunity for professional auditions, pre-advancements, placement on substitute and contractor lists, while addressing the historic lack of representation on stage. The ultimate goal of the SOPA initiative is job placement and assisting American orchestras in better reflecting our communities. If you or your organization have questions about participating in SOPA, please contact Bill Neri at Bill@SphinxMusic.org.
Parking
There are garages located on Beaubien Boulevard and Renaissance Drive. Estimated parking rates can be found on the Renaissance Center website, but note that prices are subject to change.
Dining
Dining options are available within and near the Renaissance Center. Please note that restaurant operating hours are subject to change. We always encourage attendees to call ahead, especially if they are planning group dinners.
For local dining, you are encouraged to utilize Detroit People Mover. A Detroit People Mover stop is located right outside the main entrance to the Renaissance Center.
Venue Safety
The safety of our community is of utmost importance to us, and we work collaboratively with the Detroit Marriott team in advance of and during the convening to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. This includes ensuring that our convening staff have an understanding of venue protocols.
If you have any specific questions regarding safety, please know that you are welcome and encouraged to contact us at SphinxConnect@SphinxMusic.org. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
